Love: The Great Protector
Love has been the subject of countless books, songs, and movies. It’s a universal theme that touches us all. But what is love, really? Is it just a feeling, or is there something more to it?
According to Buddhist teachings, love is the great protector. It protects us from anger, jealousy, and harm inflicted by spirits. When Buddha Shakyamuni was meditating under the Bodhi Tree, he was attacked by all the terrifying demons of this world. But his love transformed their weapons into a rain of flowers.
This is the power of love – it can transform even the most difficult situations into something beautiful. Love has the power to heal, to unite, and to bring happiness to all beings.
Most relationships between people are based on a mixture of love and attachment. This is not pure love, for it is based on a desire for our own happiness – we value the other person because they make us feel good. But pure love is unmixed with attachment and stems entirely from a concern for others’ happiness. It never gives rise to problems but only to peace and happiness for both ourselves and others.
We need to remove attachment from our minds, but this does not mean that we have to abandon our relationships. Rather, we should learn to distinguish attachment from love and gradually try to remove all traces of attachment from our relationships and to improve our love until it becomes pure.
Ultimately, our love will become the universal love of a Buddha, which actually has the power to bestow happiness on all living beings. This is the goal of the Buddhist path – to develop pure love and compassion so that we can benefit all beings without exception.
So the next time you feel anger or jealousy arising in your mind, try to cultivate a loving attitude instead. See the other person as someone who, like you, just wants to be happy and free from suffering. And remember, love is the great protector that can transform even the most difficult situations into something beautiful.
